TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 16 BETTING PREVIEW
Following the second day of rest, the course cuts a big loop north and then west of Nîmes, with a rolling profile featuring only one categorized climb.Ineos have stood out in recent Tours for their ability to use a cross-wind to unsettle their rivals. When both the 2016 and 2017 Tours were in this region, what was then Team Sky pulled off ambushes in the wind to gain useful time on their rivals.
The run-in to the finish is dead straight for the final three kilometres, the road curving slightly with about 400 metres to the line. Anyway, the sprinters' teams must study the series of roundabouts in the final km and positioning will be key in a sprint, considering the twisting finale.
So the usual suspects, Dylan Groenewegen, Elia Viviani and Caleb Ewan, are the riders to watch in Nîmes. They all won one stage so far in this Tour.
Groenewegen crashed on Stage 1, and missed the infamous Stage 10 (Albi). Viviani had a puncture on Stage 7, and ran into bad placement on Stage 1. Ewan has by far been the most consistent, although he is yet to complete his first Tour de France and could be faigued after the Pyrenees.
Who could challenge this trio?
Of course, we can't rule out Peter Sagan for the stage win, while Alexander Kristoff, Sonny Colbrelli, Cees Bool and Nicolo Bonifazio will probably fight for the remaining places.
Dark horses?
A surprise could come from Mike Teunissen (should Groenewegen be involved in a crash or crosswind), Matteo Trentin, Michael Matthews and Jens Debusschere (who was not sprinting in the first two weeks as he was supporting Rick Zabel) while Andre Greipel looks very far from his best from.
The likes of Cristophe Laporte, Rick Zabel, Jasper Philipsen, Giacomo Nizzolo are the sprinters who didn't reach stage 16, along with Wout Van Aert, who abandoned after a bad crash in the Time Trial.
GC leader Julian Alaphilippe is beginning to look vulnerable. He will hope for an easy stage with no crosswinds, giving him another day in yellow and more time to recover before the Alps.

TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 16 BETTING PREVIEW
We expect Peter Sagan's BORA-hansgrohe teammates going on the attack and try to drop Sam Bennett before the Intermediate Sprint in Saint-Joseph-de-Rivière, 44.5km into the stage. The serious climbing begins soon after the sprint, with two Category 2 ascents and the Category 1 Montée Saint-Nizier-du-Moucherotte, an 11km climb which rises at an average gradient of 6.5%.
This will be hardest point and will come 20km from the finish. It will be followed by a potentially windy plateau before a ramp up towards the finish line.
All three of the major climbs in Stage 16 have relatively low gradients so we expect ideal conditions for the breakaway before Wednesday's GC contenders showdown.
Stage 16 Favorites
Marc Hirschi has been a multiple headliner on the race so far. The young Swiss impressively claimed his deserved win on Stage 12 after losing out to Alaphilippe on Stage 2, then to Pogacar on Stage 9.Julian Alaphilippe is one of the most backed riders once again. This stage suits him the most as it doesn't feature monster climbs
Other likely attackers are Pierre Rolland and Jesus Herrada - both are battling for KOM points - plus riders such as Alexey Lutsenko, Matteo Trentin and Greg Van Avermaet.
We also expect something good from Team Ineos, maybe with former Giro D'Italia winner Richard Carapaz rather than Egan Bernal.
Any long-shot with good chances?
This stage presents another opportunity for some of the riders we tipped for Sunday’s Stage 15: BORA’s Max Schachmann and Lennard Kämna, FDJ's David Gaudu. EF Pro Cycling's Daniel Martinez (who won stage 13), Tiesj Benoot from Team Sunweb, Movistar's Marc Soler, Mitchelton-Scott's Esteban Chavez.Emmanuel Buchmann is another possible contender, as well as Pello Bilbao, Thomas De Gendt and Alessandro De Marchi.
We don't fancy Thibaut Pinot as he looked in bad shape on Sunday. We would also overlook Daniel Martin and Alejandro Valverde.
